Vice President Kamala Harris will not preside over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's joint address to Congress due to a prior commitment in Indiana, attending the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Grand Boule. With Harris absent, Senate President pro tempore Patty Murray also declined to preside and will boycott the address. Senator Ben Cardin, who is retiring after this Congress, will take on the role instead.
Harris, recently becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee for president after President Biden suspended his campaign, is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu separately at the White House. Harris's office emphasized that her absence should not be seen as a shift in her stance on Israel. She plans to reaffirm her support for Israel's defense against Iran and its allies, condemn the October 2023 Hamas attack, and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, pushing for a ceasefire that ensures Israel's security and civilian rights in Gaza.
