In the fight for control of the U.S. Senate, all roads run through Pennsylvania in 2024. And former hedge fund CEO Dave McCormick is gearing up to lead the Republican charge to flip one of the nation's most pivotal seats.
McCormick, who narrowly lost the 2022 GOP primary to Dr. Mehmet Oz, is already being touted as the front-runner for the nomination this cycle. The 57-year-old veteran is leaning into his Western Pennsylvania roots and military background as an attack aviator as he takes aim at Democratic incumbent John Fetterman.
"The last two years have shown that bad policies from Washington have severe consequences for families in places like Pittsburgh and Scranton," McCormick said in an interview. "I've spent my life in service to this country, and I know what's at stake. Pennsylvanians deserve a leader who is battle-tested and ready to fight for the values that make this state great."
McCormick is expected to self-fund a significant portion of his campaign war chest. He's already secured endorsements from key Trumpworld figures like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, setting up a strong support system for his Senate campaign.
Democratic strategists view McCormick as a formidable foe whose business acumen and outsider branding could pose a stiff challenge in a state that's become a toss-up battleground. They're closely monitoring Fetterman's health after the Pennsylvania Lt. Governor's stroke last year.
"McCormick checks a lot of boxes and has the resources to seriously disrupt the Democratic hold on this seat," said one party insider. "If Fetterman isn't at full strength, this could get away from Democrats very quickly."
With the Senate likely coming down to the slimmest of majorities, all eyes will be on Pennsylvania and whether McCormick's deep pockets can help return the seat to Republican control. His heavyweight entry sets the stage for an enormously consequential clash that could help re-shape the balance of power in Washington.
