In a major victory for election integrity, the Supreme Court has rejected an undemocratic attempt by the Left to usurp redistricting powers rightly belonging to state legislatures.
The 6-3 ruling allows Republican-drawn congressional maps in South Carolina to remain in place for the 2024 elections, overturning a lower court decision that unilaterally blocked them on spurious racial gerrymandering claims.
Writing for the court's majority, Justice Samuel Alito rightly recognized that the evidence clearly showed the GOP legislature's maps represented "reasonable" policy decisions well within their constitutional prerogatives. Fellow conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh provided a pivotal concurring opinion stressing unelected federal judges have no business substituting their own policy preferences on redistricting.
"This ruling affirms that partisan judges can't simply discard legal maps and impose their own warped visions on the democratic process," said Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation's Election Law Reform Initiative. "It's a crucial check on the Left's multi-pronged assault on the constitutional principle of state legislative authority over elections."
The Left's outrage at the decision was as predictable as it was farcical. In a hysterical dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson incredibly claimed the majority was "blinking reality" in upholding lawful maps she clearly disagreed with on ideological grounds. Liberal activists decried the ruling as an assault on minority voting rights, while completely eliding over their own overreach.
Democrats like Stacey Abrams' disgraced Fair Fight outfit have spent the past two years attempting to codify a permanent liberal majority through the courts - an affront to core democratic principles of self-governance. Federal district judges proved all too willing to indulge this anti-constitutional crusade and anoint themselves supreme map-drawers on a whim.
"Unelected activists in robes nearly succeeded in flat-out stealing the people's representation in South Carolina through nakedly partisan rulings," said Gov. Henry McMaster. "This resounding Supreme Court rebuke prevented a grave injustice."
The Left's obstructionism and failed gambit to try usurping legislative authority underscore their sheer desperation to cling to power through anti-democratic means. Unable to convince voters, they sought to rig the system and entrench their advantage through redistricting fiat.
Court battles over redistricting have raged for decades. But under President Biden, the lawfare has accelerated from dubiously designated "nonpartisan" outfits explicitly seeking to cement Democratic hegemony nationwide - aims anathema to basic democratic norms.
Thankfully, the rule of law prevailed over such shameless power politics masquerading as civil rights agitation. While progressives bemoan attacks on voting rights, it's their side brazenly subverting the electoral process through judicially-enabled gerrymandering scams.
The South Carolina decision should send an unmistakable message - unaccountable bureaucrats and agenda-driven judicial activists cannot arrogate legislative duties to themselves in a functioning republic. Partisan mapmaking isn't pretty, but it beats having shadowy cabals and unelected partisans cut out the people's representatives altogether.
Upholding the integrity of America's unique system of separated powers, federalism and popular sovereignty requires constant vigilance. With South Carolina, the High Court has dealt a righteous setback to anti-constitutional forces seeking to undermine election laws and impose permanent elite minority rule over a resentful public. It's a pivotal victory for self-government in an era of escalating institutional warfare over whose voice counts most.
